Getting Started

Treatment begins with an initial consultation, to evaluate your needs, and to determine what kind of help you require. This gives us time to decide whether psychotherapy is the best option for you, and gives you a chance to get to know my style of working. You are also encouraged to ask questions of me, to help you decide whether you think we are a 'good fit.' It is important that you feel comfortable with me and that you make a thoughtful choice in selecting a therapist. The quality of the relationship between therapist and patient can factor significantly into the success of the therapy.

Individual Psychotherapy

Individual therapy provides the space to explore new possibilities and develop the tools and skills necessary for making meaningful and enduring changes. Many of us at one time or another experience anxiety, depression, or problems with intimacy and self-esteem. I offer individualized treatment through sensitive and personal interaction, grounded in my clinical experience and psychoanalytic understanding. In some cases, I employ a psychoanalytic approach; while in others, a less intensive, supportive approach is enough. Sessions are typically 45 minutes in length, and I meet with individuals once-weekly or more, depending on your specific circumstances.

Psychoanalysis

Psychoanalysis can be the treatment of choice for those who want to get to the root of long-standing problems and patterns, but have not achieved satisfying results with less intensive forms of psychotherapy.  The primary difference between psychoanalysis and psychoanalytically informed psychotherapy is the frequency of sessions per week. Since psychoanalysis typically addresses problems that have been in existence for many years, meeting three to five days per week may be necessary to overcome the fixed patterns of thinking and behavior that have developed over time.

Couples Therapy

As most couples know, being in a committed relationship can bring its challenges, but the rewards can be great. Relationships require care, to endure in ways that are fulfilling for both partners. In my practice, therapy sessions for couples typically last 60 minutes.

In intimate relationships, most difficulties revolve around key issues: communication, emotional needs, money, sexual intimacy, and parenting. Problems between members of a couple are very rarely due to just one person. Each individual is complex, with his or her own fears, hopes, fantasies, and needs. I help couples learn about themselves and more fully know each other, while providing a place where issues can be explored and expressed in a safe environment.

Clinical Supervision

I believe that regular supervision, consultation and ongoing study enables the therapist to maintain a level of excellence and enthusiasm for their work. For this reason, I am a firm believer in ongoing training for all psychotherapists. I enjoy helping clinicians integrate their education with experience as they develop their skills. I offer professional development for licensed clinicians who value the exploration of their own work with the competent guidance of a more experienced clinician.
